Dickson Electric System (DES) is inviting the community to join us in celebrating Public Power Week, October 5th-11th. As one of over 2,000 community-powered, not-for-profit electric utilities serving 49 million Americans, DES is committed to providing reliable, efficient, and affordable electricity to the Dickson community.
Dickson Electric System (DES) invites students to help tell that story through the “Powering Dickson – Our Community, Our Heroes, Our Safety” Student Art Contest.
This art contest is a chance for students to creatively explore the impact of public power while learning about energy, safety, and service.
The contest is open to all K–12 students in the DES service area, with age-appropriate prompts that encourage both imagination and awareness:
🎨 Grade-Level Prompts
- Grades K–2: “Lineworkers as Superheroes”
Draw DES lineworkers as the everyday heroes they are—restoring power, helping neighbors, and keeping the lights on. - Grades 3–5: “How Does Electricity Help Your School, Park, or Favorite Place?”
Show how electricity brings life and energy to your favorite spaces in the community. - Grades 6–8 (choose one prompt):
🛑 “Safety First!” Poster Design – Create a public safety poster with tips for staying safe around electricity. Use symbols, slogans, and strong visuals.
⚡ “Electricity Time Machine” – Compare how electricity was used in Dickson 50 years ago versus today. Use historical research to tell a visual story. - Grades 9–12 (choose one prompt):
🔮 “Powering the Future” – Imagine how Dickson Electric might evolve in 50 years: solar energy, EVs, smart homes, and beyond.
🌐 “The Ripple Effect” – Illustrate how one power outage can affect multiple parts of our lives—schools, hospitals, and businesses.
👷 “Unsung Heroes” – Create a portrait or story-based artwork honoring the dedication of DES employees.
The deadline for submissions is September 26, 2025. Winning students in each age group will receive an Amazon gift card and have their artwork proudly displayed during Public Power Week.
