Year-Round Energy-Saving Tips
There are a number of simple things you can do around the house to save money on energy costs all year-round.
Appliances
- Run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads.
- Use cold water for laundry.
- Clean dryer lint filter after every load.
- Reduce refrigerator door openings to save energy and enhance efficiency.
Heating & Cooling
- Adjust air conditioning thermostat to 78°F in summer.
- Set thermostat to 85°F+ when away from home.
- During winter, set thermostat to 68°F and lower before leaving.
- Install ceiling fans for better cooling and thermostat adjustments.
- Seal leaks in air handlers, ductwork, windows, doors, plumbing to prevent energy loss.
- Close those curtains! Or mini-blinds, or shutters—and you’ll keep the summer’s heat out.
- During winter months, open your shades again and let in the warm sunshine.
- Change or clean heating and air-conditioning filters every 1 to 3 months.
Electronics
- Prevent standby power usage in electronics.
- Unplug devices or use surge protectors when not in use.
- Opt for corded alternatives to reduce standby power.

Lighting & Lawn
- Water your lawn before 10 a.m. to minimize evaporation.
