General FAQs

What is VoIP?

VoIP, orVoice over Internet Protocol, is a technology that allows you to make phone calls over the internet instead of traditional phone lines. It converts your voice into digital signals that travel over your internet connection, providing clear, reliable calls with features like voicemail, call forwarding, and virtual numbers. With our service, the ONT or router installed during your setup provides a standard POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) hand-off, allowing you to connect a traditional phone or existing home phone wiring for use with VoIP. This ensures a familiar experience while leveraging your fiber internet connection.

Is VoIP secure?

Yes. VoIP calls over fiber are encrypted and transmitted digitally, making them more secure than traditional copper lines

What equipment is needed for our Phone Service?

To use our phone service, you need theONT or router installed during your fiber setup. The ONT or router provides a standard POTS hand-off, allowing you to connect a traditional phone or your home’s existing phone wiring. Customers must provide their own phone; no additional equipment is required for standard service.

Can I keep my existing phone number?

Yes! You can typicallykeep your existing phone number when switching to our phone service. During the setup process, our team will guide you through porting your number from your current provider to ensure a smooth transition with minimal downtime. It’s important to have your current account information ready to complete the process. Please note: do not cancel your current provider until installation is complete to ensure your number transfers properly and is not lost.

How reliable is VoIP?

VoIP is very reliable when used with a stable, high-speed internet connection like fiber. Calls are clear and consistent, and features such as voicemail, call forwarding, and caller ID work just like a traditional phone line. Service reliability can be affected by internet outages or power interruptions, so having abattery backup for your ONT or router can help maintain phone service during temporary power loss.

Does the service support fax machines?

Yes, our VoIP service supports fax machines when connected through the standard POTS hand-off, but results may vary depending on the fax machine. For more consistent faxing, avirtual fax service is also available as an alternative.

Can I use a cordless phone?

Yes, cordless phones that connect to a standard phone jack are fully compatible with our VoIP service. Ensure the base unit is plugged into the POTS hand-off or wall jack provided during installation.

Troubleshooting FAQs

What if I move, can I take my phone number with me?

In most cases, you can keep your existing phone number when moving, as long as the new location is within our service area or you port the number to another provider. Contact our team ahead of your move to arrange number porting and ensure uninterrupted service.

What happens to my phone service if the internet goes down?

Our phone service uses the internet, but we connect it via a dedicated internet oath separate from your home internet. If your home internet fails, voice service remains active. However, should the ONT or router go down for any reason, voice service will not work.

What happens to my phone services if the power goes out?

Since our phone service uses VoIP over your fiber connection, it relies on theONT and router, which require electricity to operate. During a power outage, phone service will not work unless you have a battery backup or generator connected to keep the equipment powered. We recommend keeping a backup solution in place to maintain phone connectivity during power interruptions.

How do I access my voicemail?

A stuttered dial tone indicates your voicemail box has unread messages. This tone lets you know you have new messages or messages marked as unread in your voicemail box. To listen to your messages, access the voicemail box and press 1 Use the following to navigate the menu:

  • Press 1: Skip message and mark it as “unread”
  • Press 2: Save message and mark it as “read”
  • Press 3: Erase message
  • Press 9: Repeat message
  • Press 0: Exit menu

For instructions on how to access your voicemailbox remotely or make changes to your voicemail, see the Home Phone User Guide (PDF).

My calls are dropping. What do I do?

Dropped calls are usually caused by internet interruptions or equipment placement issues. First, check that yourONT or router are powered on and connected properly. If the issue continues, contact our technical support team, and they can help troubleshoot or adjust your setup for more stable VoIP performance.

Why am I getting static or noise on the line?

Static or noise on your VoIP phone line is usually caused byconnection issues, power interruptions, or faulty wiring. Make sure your ONT or router are securely connected and powered on, and check that your phone is properly plugged into the POTS hand-off or wall jack. If the issue persists, try testing with a different phone to rule out equipment problems. If static continues, contact our technical support team for further troubleshooting and resolution.
